Shinyoung Kim is a researcher and media practitioner pursuing an M.A. in Cinema Studies at New York University. Her research focuses on contemporary Asian American cinema, particularly Korean diasporic screen cultures, attending to the quiet complexities of migration, belonging, and vulnerability and the structures of power that shape them.
Central to this work is a concept she calls the art of weakness, through which she examines how cinema mediates racialized grief, diasporic precarity, and the politics of cultural value. Her research also extends through media-making and visual ethnography, including work on Korean immigrant life in the American South with particular attention to place, labor, and memory.
